How to eat well on Nightshift!

Morning!

Today I am going to write a little bit about how I keep healthy on night shift. I have struggled for so long to find the right balance for me and to find the right foods to eat that will keep me going. Where I work it is right next door we have a McDonalds then there's a pizza place right round the corner and a chipper round the other corner, so I know all too well the temptations. Previously it would be that me and a few of my colleagues would go and get a McDonalds and then for the next break have more stuff to snack on as well as have sugary energy drinks and fizzy pop. By the time I would finish I would be so tired I could barely get home, and I could feel my energy levels drop dramatically. So I thought to myself there must be a better way of keeping me going without the added calories. It took a little trial and error but I finally got there:

1. Drink plenty of water-
I've done the energy drinks and the fizzy pop and all these things I thought would help keep me awake but the thing that I think helps most is just plain H2O. Keeping yourself hydrated is detrimental in keeping you body going. You won't get any sugar highs or lows when the sugar wears off and drinking water has a whole host of other health benefits. Plus think of the cost... IT COSTS NOTHING! If you invest in a really good water bottle then all you have to do is fill it, drink it, wash it and repeat. Get water straight out of the tap and keep refilling that baby!

2. Avoid eating too much rubbish-
It's so easy to live off of crisps and sweets on night shift and to do a lot of little snacking. Pot noodles, microwave burgers, cheese toasties. All these things which only take seconds to make so are easy and little effort but all add up to an horrendous amount of calories. Yoghurts are something that I have in my pack up now as they are really filling, especially if you add some fruit and berries in there, also depending on what you put with it still gives you the energy you need without relying on anything really sugary.  You don't have to live off of carrots and a sheet of lettuce but everything in moderation.

3.Meal prep-
Have a plan in place of what you want to eat and stick to it. I did my research and once cooked it's amazing how long something can last in your fridge. It's also good to meal prep because if you have it there you are more likely to stick to what you have already made than going and buying any extras. You don't even have to just prep what you are going to take with you, you can do breakfast, lunches, snacks. Have that all ready in your fridge or freezer and you'll be golden. Meal prepping has helped me so much in getting ready for work. It cuts out a lot of time, there's no standing at the fridge wondering what I'm going to have and there's no quick trips to the shop buying things that actually you don't need.

Obviously it's all about what works best for yourself and everyone's body is different and reacts to things differently.

Well that's it for today folks. I've got some exciting things planned for my upcoming blogs so keep your eyes peeled.
